What Is an Eccentric Press? Sheet Metal Cutting, Punching and Bending

An eccentric press is a mechanical press that transfers motor power through a flywheel and an eccentric shaft to the ram. It is one of the most widely used machines in series production of sheet metal parts. Here is how it works, what it is used for and what matters for good results.

How Does an Eccentric Press Work?

The motor keeps a heavy flywheel spinning to store energy. When the clutch engages, this energy is transferred to the eccentric shaft, which converts rotation into the ram's up-and-down stroke. The upper die on the ram meets the lower die on the bed to cut, punch or bend the sheet. Because every stroke repeats the same motion, parts are produced quickly and consistently.

Operations Performed on an Eccentric Press

  • Blanking: cutting the outer contour of the part from sheet.
  • Punching: making holes and windows in the part.
  • Bending: forming the sheet to defined angles.
  • Forming and shallow drawing: adding ribs, embossing or form.
  • Progressive dies: strip material advancing one station per stroke until a finished part is produced.

Advantages

High stroke rates lower unit cost in high-volume production. The mechanical motion repeats identically every stroke, minimising dimensional variation. Maintenance is relatively simple, and with the right die the press works efficiently for many years.

The Die Matters as Much as the Press

Part quality depends more on the die than the machine. If the cutting clearance between punch and die is not chosen correctly for sheet thickness and material, burrs form, the cut edge deteriorates and the die wears early. That is why sheet and metal cutting-bending dies should be planned together with press production.

Industries

White goods, heating-cooling, automotive supply, electrical enclosures, furniture fittings and medical equipment rely heavily on sheet metal parts produced on eccentric presses.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an eccentric and a hydraulic press?

An eccentric press is mechanical and excels at fast, repetitive cutting and punching. A hydraulic press applies controlled force throughout the stroke and is preferred for slow, force-intensive work such as deep drawing.

What sheet thicknesses can be processed?

It depends on press capacity, material and die design. Send us your drawing and we will evaluate it together. See our Eccentric Press service page for details.
